When Is the Best Time to Schedule Your Maternity Photos?

Pregnancy is such a beautiful, fleeting chapter in life—one worth celebrating and preserving through photographs. If you’re an expecting mama, you might be wondering: When’s the best time to take maternity photos?

As a maternity photographer in Owatonna, MN, this is one of the most common questions I get. While every pregnancy is unique, I usually recommend scheduling your session between 32 and 36 weeks of pregnancy.

Why 32–36 Weeks Is Ideal

  • Your Bump Is Perfectly Defined
  • By this stage, your belly has that beautiful, full round shape that photographs so well. Earlier than 32 weeks, your bump may not show as much on camera, especially for first-time moms.
  • You’re Still Comfortable Enough to Pose
  • Most mamas still have enough energy to walk, sit, and change positions comfortably during this time. After 36 weeks, you may start to feel more tired, swollen, or just ready for baby to arrive—so photos can become more challenging.
  • You’ll Avoid Cutting It Too Close
  • Babies love to arrive on their own schedule! Planning your session a few weeks before your due date ensures we capture your pregnancy glow without the stress of scheduling too close to delivery.

Can I Do Photos Later Than 36 Weeks?

Absolutely! I’ve photographed beautiful sessions at 37–39 weeks, and those last-minute bump photos can be stunning. Just keep in mind it may take more creativity with posing to keep you comfortable, and there’s always the chance your little one could arrive early.

Studio or Outdoor?

Here in Owatonna, MN, you have options. My cozy studio is perfect for intimate, relaxed sessions (especially in colder months), while outdoor spots capture Minnesota’s natural beauty with dreamy golden-hour light. Whether indoors or outside, the most important thing is timing your session when you feel confident and glowing.

Final Tip: Book Early!

Even though the sweet spot is between 32–36 weeks, I always recommend reaching out much earlier in your pregnancy to reserve your spot. This ensures we have plenty of time to plan your outfits, location, and any special touches—like including your partner, kids, or keepsakes that matter to you.

✨ Your pregnancy deserves to be celebrated. Whether it’s your first baby or your fourth, capturing this moment will be a memory you’ll treasure forever.
